Message from Rose, our CE - Tumu Whakarae

Every day across Aotearoa, community organisations are doing outstanding mahi, often in challenging circumstances, yet we continue to give our time and expertise to support whānau, strengthen communities, and hold kaupapa with care. I am always inspired by the generosity, courage and commitment shown by those of us who serve – governing, working, and volunteering. We are often doing it all, and all at once, juggling pressure and change while staying grounded in responsibility to the people we serve. This is the strength of our sector, governing through values, with care, respect and integrity, even as expectations grow and resources are stretched.

This year marked important progress. We strengthened key partnerships with the Indigenous Governance Institute and Community Directors Australia, and launched the Certified Community Directors course, to build governance confidence and capability. We also reached a significant milestone, with our community growing beyond 5,000 people – a reflection of both demand and a shared commitment to strong governance practice across the sector.

At the same time, the environment is shifting. Changes in funding and legislation, alongside the growing influence of technology, data and artificial intelligence, are reshaping the systems we operate and govern within. The landscape is changing, and we must continue to keep pace, together. As we look ahead, our role remains clear: to support, connect and lead with our community as we navigate what comes next, strengthening governance practice, opening important conversations, and building long-term legacy through initiatives like the Good Governance Code and our growing Board Talks network.

Because when community governance is strong, communities are stronger.

Thank you to the Board, our supporters and our wonderful community.
